What's a good way to get a girl to talk to you or how to start one with them?

I know pick up lines don't work (girls hate them) but is their a way to talk to a girl without her thinking your weird or embarassing yourself. I just finished my first week of highschool as a freshmen and I am trying to start over.What's a good way to get a girl to talk to you or how to start one with them?

Start a conversation with her and pay attention to what she has to say. Girls love to be heard. Compliment her. Bring her gifts when you do get her attention. Be sweet and caring. By talking about her.
Just say hello to her. Be honest and tell her how pretty you think she is. Tell her it's not a come-on it's just an obvious observation. Then take it from there.

compliments work really well! also, we really like it when guys are nice, and act the same way around us even when their friends are around.
i always suggest a comment about something in the common, ambient environment such as ';it's gotten cloudy'; or ';they changed the posters in here'; or ';the busses are late today'; something like that. if the girl is interested, she will most likely respond and want to continue the conversation. if she acts uninterested then she's probably not interested in you.

Just the typical things to start off with like how are you what you been up too and stuff like that then usually there is something that you can talk about

for example if you ask them what they been up too and they answer school or study or something you can ask them what are they studying etc and it just devolps into and conversation
